    65 engine temp

I was driving my 65 with a 327/350hp and it was about 60 degrees outside, and about 45min on the highway the temp was just above 180. I'm thinking when the weather gets hot it's going to run hotter. The motor is pretty new and I don't know what thermostat is in it. But I have a 434ci motor in my 57 and the temp will sit at about 150. Is this normal for the 327? And I'm thinking of putting a 165 thermostat in it. Any thoughts?

Have you verified the temp with an IR gun? The gauge might not be accurate. Besides the thermostat a few other things to check are your clutch fan, distributor vacuum advance, radiator, etc. Is the motor broke in (you said it is new)? What did it run at before the rebuild? Good luck, Don H.

I don't have an IR gun,and don't know what it ran before the rebuild because I got it just after it was done. My question is, is that a normal temp? I was told by someone that its a good temp but just want to hear from someone else what they think.
Thanks for info you can give.

180 degrees is a normal temperature. You may have a 180 degree thermostat which is the correct thermostat for your application and the only one I recommend.

Thank you !!!! It's funny because my 424/425 ran cooler in these temps. Thanks for your input.

I think I'd try to run the 434 in your '57 a little warmer. 150 is not doing it any favours.

As others have stated, 180 degrees running for 45 minutes is perfectly acceptable under the ambient conditions. Do yourself a mental favor and go by Harbor Freight (or elsewhere) and buy yourself an IR gun...very inexpensive. This will then give you an accurate reading as to what the true temp is when your car's indicator is showing 180 degrees. Hold the IR gun about 6" from the top of the thermostat housing and you will get your best reading.

If you have a 160 thermostat the run temp is going to go up to it's normal range anyway say 180. It will take a bit longer but the results are the same.

On a cool day it stays about 150 on the highway. On a hot day it will go to 180 and sit there.
