71 Wheel Weights and Balancing

I want to have the correct weights on my car and am thinking I will balance the wheels with regular wheel weights and then once zI know what size and how many replace them with correct ones. Or does anyone have any other suggestions. I don,t want to buy any more original weights than necessary.

That sounds like a good plan. However, keep in mind that weights were originally only installed on the inside of the rim. So, if you have the wheels/tires professionally balanced you'll need to tell them this. Then, they might not want to do it or they might not be able to do it with modern equipment.

That won,t be a problem, I have my own shop with balancing equipment. I will give it a try on one but am sure they can do it only on the back side.

It can be easily done on a static balancer (i.e. "bubble" balancer). However, I don't think those are too common nowadays.

Sheldon, I just finished balancing the tires on my 63 which has coker 670/15 BFG Silvertowns . These repro tires are the worst, so what I did was balance them, knock on the after market weights, then I knew where the heavy spot was, I then broke down one side of the tire and pushed the tire wall inward and added up the weight and used stick on weights in the middle of the wheel and then re-inflated. then I rebalanced the wheel and tire and used a small weight on the inside, generally about .75 to 1.75 weight.

Not sure how your tires will do, but if you run into one or more tires that require to much weight, as I did it will look better this way. Repro tires are not a high production tire so when these tires are make its generally make small runs of tires and quality suffers.

Hi Kevin. And do I correctly recall our discussion where you advised that OE weights came in 0.5oz increments only? I offer this (if correct) in case someone (&#128064 wants to replace non typical weights with typical with a one for one substitution. Please refresh my memory. Thanks.

I believe most current dynamic balancing equipment can also be set up to do just static balancing. Another option to achieve dynamic balance is to use stick on weights on the inside of the rim as close to the spider as possible where it may not be visible and OE weights on the inside flange.

Most machines allow you to input the distance of the weights from the circumferential centerline of the wheel, which should give the correct weight without trial and error.
