Gear shift stuck in 2nd gear -1972 LT1

While out for a short spin my gear shift all of a sudden got stuck in 2nd gear and would not shift into any other gear. It was stuck in 2nd gear, however the shifter was in the neutral position. I checked the linkage at the tranny and it is secure and appears properly fastened.

Any ideas is to what is going on?

Are you running an aftermarket Hurst shifter? If so, read THIS. It's a very common problem.

I neglected to mention it is an original GM shifter and Munice transmission.

You may be able to crawl underneath and tap on the linkage to free it up. It is not really uncommon for a worn shifter to hang up as it passes through the neutral gate.

May be time to rebuild the shifter or simply replace with an NOS shifter depending on fund availability and part availability.

The AIM has a really nice setup/adjustment instruction sheet on this. I made a locating tool to fit in the slot. Pretty tight so you have to put your car up on a lift or ramps. I would loosen everything up and follow the instructions .

I had this once in my 71. I had to get under it and manually move the lever out of second gear. It did it a couple more times until I rebuilt the transmission, which then resolved the issue.
