    1963 Coupe Windshield Trim Clips

I am trying to determine the correct total number of windshield clips on the 63 coupe.

The AIM and service manual suggest 13 on the lower side and 11 onthe top side. For some reason I have 15 bottom and 13 top side but I may not have been the first there so I want to be sure. I would appreciate any information from 63 owners that have removed there windshield and can verify the # of clips. Pics would be good also, I will post a pic of the clip arrangement on my coupe tomorrow.

I have removed my windshield because there was a poor rubber to glass seal at the lower corner location where the thick clips (three metal windshield frame layers) are located. The new installer (me) has fired the old installer (me) and I am going to get it right this time. I am going to reuse the gasket as it's in V/G condition unless that's not a good idea.

I am pretty clear on the caulk sealer, I am actually thinking about using strip caulk, any thoughts? I also have some 3M window weld primer #8643 that's supposed to be a primer for sealant at the rubber to glass so I opened the little can and put some on my fingers and it seems like contact cement. Is this stuff good enough by itself for the glass/rubber seal.

I made a mistake getting a tinted glass from OEM a long time ago and my second week November car may be to early for the tinted but I am thinking about installing it anyway. How early did the 63 cars see a tinted windshield?

Thanks in advance for all suggestions, I appreciate any information because there is alot of bad information on the web.

      Leif,

I have read that one, IMO, the clip arrangement in that picture Paul posted is not correct. According to the AIM there are six wide clips, four on the bottom pinch welt and two up top. The picture in question needs one more thin clip on each side top and bottom to accept the slip in clip that goes inside the vertical reveal moulding. The original thin clips on my coupe have one end broken off intentionally, the six thick clips are in tact.

      Thanks for the help,

      Tim

I have a July cp it has 15 clips on the bottom and 12 on top (glass was never out), my early car could not keep the trim down in the corners so I pulled the glass and added clips I am sure as they got better at installing trim the guys on the line did what ever the could to keep the trim on.

          Donald,

Thank you for responding to my post, that's exactly the information I am looking for. I will post a picture later today showing the clip arrangement top and bottom as I have installed them on my coupe so check back.

I have what I believe is the original lower trim off the car and the clip locations were marked (not by me) and from what I can tell the spacing indicates 13 clips like the service manual and AIM call for so maybe clips were added as you suggest. I am thinking 22 thin and six thick clips (13 top 15 bottom) plus the four corner clips that slip into the top/bottom of the side reveal molding.

That article gets a WOW, WOW, WOW!!!! So interesting is the article itself! A lot to be learned on the positive side. Would not classify that under an NCRS restoration but amazing article.

Uh. Are you talking about this one Joe I deleted it initially because the clip configuration didn't match what folks had indicated above (the thick clips specifically); definitely not NCRS but tons of info:

                Frank,

Yes, I guess I saw that before you deleted. Great information for everyone. Thanks,

That's why I wanted to post my concerns about the clip usage plus get it in the archives as it may help some else in the future.

Frank, I read that article also, if you look at the AIM section 1 sheet B13 item 11 it clearly shows the six thicker clips, four used on the lower and two up top. The car windshield frame matches with the three metal overlaping pinch welt layers at these locations.

Pictures of the clips on my car, 15 bottom 13 top. The clips in the four corners are to accept the slide in clips that go inside the vertical mouldings. I am missing the lower slide in clips for the vertical moulding, all the rest are originals. Note how one tab on the thin clips is snapped off.
