Fledgling Flight - Where do I Start?

Brothers: I was considering taking my 1966 up to Frisco in October to the NCRS 2016 Lone Star Regional. I'm interested in seeing how the car does; but, I'd also would like to try to start the process to possibly becoming a NCRS Judge (long road I know). Now that my last son finished his final Merit Badge and Eagle Scout Project today (talk about a long road for Julie and me), I now need a new challenge. Can any of you guys give me 2 - 3 best practices on the following: (1) How do I best prepare for Flight Judging; and (2) What's step 1 to trying to become a NCRS Judge. Many thanks for your consideration. Best, Ned

    Ned,

Bring your '66 onto Frisco. It's a great meet, you'll have a good time and meet some good NCRS folks.

    1) buy a '66 Judging Manual
    2) download the '66 Judging Sheets
    3) Judge the car yourself
    4) see if you can get some of the Houston area Texas Chapter members to mock Judge your '66 http://www.ncrstexas.org/contact.htm
    5) register your car for Frisco
    6) sign up for Observer Judge when you register for Frisco (you can OJ on the day your '66's not being Judged)

Good luck. Looking forward to seeing you and your '66 in Frisco in October

        Ned,

Your on the right road to the Lone Star Regional. A bunch of great guys and all you have to do is register and sign up for an observer judge when you register your car for judging.
Its easy and fun. You will be happy with your experience.

        JR

        PS. Great looking 66!

Gary: I have a truck and access to an open trailer. While the Vette can easily make the trip on its own, the paint is super nice. Consequently I'm thinking of hauling her up. What are your thoughts?

Definitely bring that '66 to Frisco, a long journey always begins with the first step, and that is to get a car into judging. I will be in Frisco, as I usually am, and would be very happy to see that car there and even buy you a drink and talk. Gary has given you the steps involved, I started about 7 years ago along the path (with a '66 even), I still don't know much but learn tons every time I judge and/or bring a car in for judging. Enjoy the journey.

In addition to the great advise you have already received, OPERATIONS. Many points and usually easy to fix. Good luck, Don H.

It would be nice if you could take your car to a chapter meet before the regional if you could find one that is not too far away. Agree with the operation part, it don't take long before those 25 pointers add up.

Re: Fledgling Flight - Where do I Start?

Gents: OK, based upon all the good advice, I've taken the plunge and am now all signed up and good-to-go. Gary Chesnut kindly advised that if I wanted to try to be an Observor Judge that I should present myself on the morning of October 21 before 8:00 a.m. It should be a fun couple of days. Thanks for all the counsel guys. I think that there's a NCRS Judge somewhere around my neck of the woods (Spring, Texas 77380); I'll need to track him down and offer up a first class lunch in exchange for him taking a mock look at my Vette. If anyone knows of a local guy, please let me know. I'll look forward to meeting some of you in October. All for now. best, Ned

If you can, and he has not moved yet, get hold of Tim Ehlers (#22449), his contact info should be in your Tailpipe magazine from the Texas Chapter, he is very close to you and about as experienced a judge as you will find. Good luck, see you in Frisco.

I wish you could get to our Saturday morning group in Austin. We meet every Saturday morning and work on Corvettes. We had 12 guys last Saturday and worked on my '67 small block and worked on a '66 425 horse that has been having electrical problems.

Michael: Will do. I have this Friday (August 5th) off. I'll reach out to Tim this week and see if he has an hour on Friday to look at the Vette and then have a nice lunch nearby. Much obliged for the guidance. Best, Ned

I may add that Tim Ehlers is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. His wife is wonderful, also.

Absolutely, and we really missed those two on the Texas Road Tour this year, the first year in many when they were not with us.
