    69 Alternator

I'm the original owner of a 69 L36 with A/C. Many years ago I replaced the alternator. I really don't remember if it was malfunctioning or if I just wanted one that looked better.

I still have what I'm fairly certain is the original alternator. However, the p/n doesn't match any called for in the TI&JM or the AIM. Mine has p/n 1103058 with date code 9F20 (meaning June 20, 1969). The car was built 9/7/69, so the alternator's date code seems reasonable. Also on the line with the date code is 63A (indicating 63 amps?). This doesn't match the TI&JM either. No B code is visible.

If the consensus is that the old alternator could be correct, would it be worth restoring? I see an ad in latest Driveline for Ken Bruno Motorsports. Has anyone had experience with this company? The FAQ on their website indicates a cost of $195 to $250. Other recommendations?

    Thanks everyone.

    Re: 69 Alternator

Mike, the 1103058 alternator is a late 1970's to early 1980's application, and not original for the 1969 model year. It's just an amazing coincidence that it's stamped "correctly" for your car! In this case though, the date is June 20th, 1979, not 1969.

Your 1103058 alternator originally resided on a 1979 Buick or Pontiac.

1969 SI series alternators had a unique case configuration, both front and rear.

        Re: 69 Alternator

Thanks for the info Ed and Joe. I speculate that the "alien" alternator was installed when I left the car with a repair shop for some unmonitored work back in the early 90's. Ugh!

Joe, where might I find images of the unique case configuration so I'll know what to look for - in addition to the correct p/n?

Most likely your car was originally equipped with a GM #1100825 alternator. This is a VERY valuable alternator, both because of the part number as well as the front and rear case configuration. You will have an EXTREMELY difficult time finding one dated for your car and if you do find one, expect to pay a king's ransom for it. This is probably why yours apparently disappeared at the repair shop. I've heard of 1969 Corvettes being stolen and subsequently recovered with only the alternator missing. In fact, I recommend that folks remove original 1969 Corvette alternators from the cars except for judging.

Thanks Ed for the informative thread with photos.

And "thanks" Joe for the discouraging information. I know you meant well. Seriously, I always appreciate your info.

A VERY long time ago when I was about 20 years old a fellow that I worked with by the name of George Lambton used to call me "River City Joe". I didn't know why he did that but I didn't think too much of it. Finally, one day I asked him why he called me that. He told me that the "folks in River City tell it like it is and you always tell it like it is". I regarded that as a huge compliment and I've always tried to live up to it.

Being a River City guy myself (Baton Rouge variety) I wish more folks would tell it like it is. In this horrendous political season, we could use fewer lies, exaggerations, undeliverable promises, etc ... from both (major?) parties. But, I won't hold my breath ... just my nose when I vote.
