    Re: New 70-72 Judging Guide

My copy arrived today; it's an extremely impressive work.

For size comparison purposes, here it is next to my Second Edition from Spring 1993:

Page count in the new edition is 364; 150 in my old book. New is all color photography.

Many contributor names listed in the inside front cover are very familiar to me from their posts on this board. Many thanks for all the work you put into this reference work; I've never seen anything like it.

      Re: New 70-72 Judging Guide

I saw this at Carlisle this year and the color version is, by far, the best way to publish these manuals. Has their been any thought given to making the manuals available as PDF files? Since we're using Pads and the like for just about everything, it would be far less expensive to make available to members than making a spiral bound book out of it.

      Just a thought.

I suspect (?) that if a pdf went around, the thought is that anyone could then print copies and distribute them to friends. Since the selling of JGs is a significant source of income for the club, I think that they want to keep a tight rein on the number of electronic copies available.

I received my copy of the 5th Edition this weekend. Great book!

Unfortunately, I now have to un-do all of the stuff I did in reference to the 4th Edition.

This edition has added not only color photos but lots more detail and new information that has been uncovered from researching original cars.

                      Re: New 70-72 Judging Guide

OK, now the dilema... I received a color copy as a team contributor. I'm also the chapter treasurer and semi-assistant judging chairman. Our official chapter judging chairman received a B&W copy of the book with the statement "Includes Color Photos" manually crossed out on the cover. One of my chores is helping our chapter judging chairman by having on-field reference booklets made up (Operations, Interior, Exterior, Mechanical and Chassis). But, we have two different versions of the book and no a word as to which is the OFFICIAL version.

So, I don't know which one to take to the printer to get our judging reference materials made from. Is the color version the NCRS official standard or is the B&W edition the official standard????

you probably need to pose that question to Dave Brigham, the National Judging Chairman

I was trying to be a good soldier by following the chain of command, Vinnie... The NTL ought to know what's official and what isn't. I've never seen this before...two versions that are different going out at the same time???

Those of you who judged at the 2015 National got to sample the RMC on-field judging support library. We try to keep it upscale and professional with nice, separate booklets of the five functional judging sections.

To me the color version is SO superior to the B&W that it's an advantage to those using the book for quick reference. Hence, judges ought to be equipped with what NCRS says is the bona fide standard. As chapter treasurer, hey, it's just money at the printer, but I gotta know what's right and Chuck Banks, our judging chairman, is equally confused.

On the just money issue, one way to cut costs, is to take the 2.5 jillion pages of Service News out of the official JG. Put the book on a page/pub diet and let those who want the extra information, either buy it separately or make it available as a download where they bear the cost of printing. Right now the book has 118 pages of Service Bulletin related info in it that makes it want to burst through its plastic spirial binding. But, that's just one guy's opinion...

The separation of the bulletins and the creation of additional TSB publication, is in the workings. From what I've heard....

Edit: I did however, just place my order, with the fear of paying additional fees for the two......

Yup. You may be best off buying a color one and making your different sections for the Chapter. That's cheaper than having them copied.

The chapters official version is the black and white. When the printer was sent the 2 versions the front cover was not modified to leave off the print " Includes Color Photos" for the black and white copies. I blacked out the black and white photos covers so I would not confuse one with the color photos for shipment to the chapters. You should check with the NJC for his thoughts on this subject.

As for the Judging Guide I will be working in the next few weeks with one of our printers. On how we can modify the guide to reduce it size and possibly make it separate a Judging Guide and one with the Service Bulletins is one thought. But since we started with it all in one manual buyers would still receive both copies if we go in that direction.
