    Center bump under gas tank?

There is a "bump" under the gas tank in the center on the floor where the gas tank sits. It's about an inch and a half wide and about 3/4" to 1" tall. It extends upward from the console area about halfway up the floor where it ends at the hole. It is fabricated out of metal and fiberglass and looks like it may be later than factory original. From under the car it looks like it might be factory, but it's hard to tell. We're attempting to put in a new gas tank and this is impeding progress. The old gas tank was taken out about 15 years ago and we didn't recall any issues at that time. Should this bump be there? Do the gas tanks slide in really hard? I'm going to try to attach a couple of pictures showing what it looks like.

    Alan,
Is this for a C1?? It's definitely not factory nor can I discern what it would be for.

Thank you for the quick reply. We still have the old gas tank which has what looks to be a repair right in that area, but still doesn't explain why the "bump" was there... I am thinking of removing the bump and fiberglassing over the area if it isn't supposed to be there.

          Not normal on a 56 or 57.

So it should be smooth across this area? That would explain why the new tank won't go in. Thank you for the reply.

Perhaps a poorly executed attempt to repair the area below the tank? An easy way to make the new tank fit might be to "dent" its bottom to conform with the bump, but that is probably too crude to even suggest in mixed company.

I'd guess that was a repair/stiffener for a crack. That area was definitely not 'humped' in '57.
