    New Paint Judging

Looking for info on the new paint judging method. I see the online judging form has not been updated yet.

Having 58 judged in a few weeks and need to be "educated" on the new standard.

I thought there was a discussion not too long ago on the TDB about it, but the searches I've done have not produced what I was looking for.

    Thanks,

    Tom

        Re: New Paint Judging

After attending the New Paint Judging System Seminar at Warwick, with Tom and John, the most significant takeaway for me was that in the new system, with the doors and hood closed (so no looking at the door sills, drip rails, etc.) the exterior judge is supposed to make that first judgement, and if "Yes" then you are done, no opening the doors, hood, and looking any further. That to me is a significant difference in the new system.

          Hi Michael,

Well, I hope that is the case. Car was painted using single stage but I believe it will still be too "nice" and the doors will come open.....

We did leave some orange peel on the lower exterior surfaces though.

          We'll see.

          Thanks,

          Tom

Best of luck to you! As a guy who has had my share of exterior judge paint issues, I know the pain when you do everything possible to make it TFP........

              Re: New Paint Judging

The new guidelines for paint were previewed at the judging school in Grapevine earlier this year. As I recall, one motivation for the change is to give cars with nice clear coat/base coat paint jobs (or even lacquer paint that's beyond TFP) the opportunity earn 30% if the door jams still looked factory.

Concerning the first line question. Is it asking if the paint appears to be factory ORIGINAL paint or is it asking if the paint looks as factory paint should (as in a really good restoration type repaint)? Chip.

For Flight, my understanding is the latter. Since this is a restorers' society, they don't want to penalize a faithful restoration.

I'm sure the more experienced judges will chime in.

Dave, I see your meaning and appreciate your attention to detail. As you point out the guide asks "Is the Appearance consistent with factory application methods?", which I paraphrase to mean, "It's ok if the car's paint isn't original as long as it appears factory."

                    Any relation to Bill Clinton?
