      Looks like an original trim tag but the rivets are not correct for a 1966. Looks like it may have been taken from another 1966 and attached with the wrong rivets. Or removed and replaced for some reason.

        How does the K date timing fit with the VIN? It's an A O Smith Trim Tag.

          Here are two from St. Louis Bodies. Both are from 1966 model year, but the second one (as shown here) was built in late 1965.

          Note the rivets. They are 50 year old, and unchanged.

          Note also: St. Louis letter and number spacing is "without spaces between each".

              It is no good the M and the H are perfectly centered should have the right side of letters aligned. This would get by most judges but not any more.

                Gene;

                Are you talking about the M in "MOTORS" at the very top, and the H in "MICHIGAN" immediately below it?

                I am also thinking that the opening in the center of the 4 digit is very small.

                  Yes, and yes I agree the 4's look bogus too.

                    trim tag is June 15th and the vin is June 30th. is a 15 day span fine for a A.O. Smith car?

                      My AO Smith body 66 has a trim tag date of July 1, 66 and per shipping data report, the car was built July 14. So a couple of weeks doesn't seem to be all that unusual for AO Smith cars.

                        Re: 66 trim tag - what do you think

                        Need to see an image of a late "Smithy" tag. I think the difference mentioned by my friend, Gene Manno, might be due to a mid-1966 re-order of tag blanks from the supplier of same. In other words, I am not convinced this one was not produced at A O Smith in 1966.

                        The timing seems perfect.

                        I cannot find my Grenning/NCRS book, but when I do find it, I may pick up on this (Gene Manno's issue) and change my mind.

                          Tom all the imprints are same, it does not match up with known good, what you refer to as "smithy" tags.

                          I suggest reason is the original tag went onto a high dollar reconstruction car.

                            One year later, car #21602, Friday, June 23rd, 1967. The body date K-15 may be a little difficult to see.
