70 Fan Clutch Stud Hardware finish

Were the nuts natural, phosphate, or clear zinc plated?

My understanding is the studs were phosphate with blue loctite substance.

    Thanks,

    Bill

Are you referring to the studs in the water pump flange that hold the fan clutch to the water pump?
If so. Studs on my 1970 small block are natural with no locking material used. The nuts are silver plated (probably zinc or maybe cad).

Is the finish the same for a 69? Natural studs and zinc/cad nuts and washers?

FWIW my 1970 is a fairly early production (January 29) unit. There are several people who participate in this board who have 1969 Bowtie cars who can fill i8n the blanks better than I, however. In fact I suspect their might be a 1969 Bowite car at the Wisconsin Chapter meet today.

            Terry------

The studs on my 1969 were black phosphate-finished. The same studs, GM #3964274, were used from late 1969 through 1982.

I have many NOS examples of the 3964274 studs [none for sale] and they are all black phosphate finished.

              Thanks Joe. Two additional questions:

              1) guessing the nut and LW were cad?

              2) how do I get into your will?

I don't think the blue thread locking compound was on the studs used back in 1969-70 and, likely, even for awhile after that. I don't think that thread locking compound had even been invented yet. The locking compound was added to the studs sometime later, possibly before the studs ceased to be used in PRODUCTION but definitely before they were discontinued from SERVICE.

In any event, once the nuts are installed, no one will know if there was locking compound on the threads. However, it's a very good idea to use thread locking compound on the threads. In fact, the one I recommend is BLUE Loctite (i.e. medium strength).

                  1) I just don't recall, for sure, on the nuts and lockwashers. However, since Terry has reported zinc/cad plated on his original 1970, I'm sure that's correct. The same nuts and lockwashers were used for 1969;

                  2) I want the vast majority of my parts (except the ones I need to use myself) to remain "forever young". The cars are all used and, of course, all the parts on them are used. The owners are well-used and, more-and-more, "used up". But, at least, I want some of the components of the cars to remain unused and, thus, "forever young".

Early '69's used bolts instead of studs which made installation much more difficult. Later cars (AIM shows that sheet- UPC 6 sheet A4- redrawn and redesigned 3-13-69) used studs with locks and nuts. When I install the fan clutch and pulleys on my Oct '68 car I temporarily install studs and remove them one at a time to install the original bolts/locks. What does the '68 AIM show- studs or bolts?

1968 shows bolts and, yes, these were the same as used on early 1969.

After nuts are run down black phosphate coated studs or bolts, enough of the black phosphate is removed that the threads might appear natural.

I have located and have ordered some NOS studs. They have black phosphate finish as you suggest. They also have the blue locking compound on them.
