    Question on PS cylinder install

    Guys,

im installing my PS cylinder and i had a couple of questions. Even though I had ordered a new cylinder a couple of years ago I had to order a rebuild kit because I had replaced the boot that goes over the center link connector. My questions are:

is there anything else that goes on that connector part other than the boot? I'm referring to the cork or felt washer that is included in the kit. It seems as thought it might be for that area. Also, the new cylinder came with hardware to connect it to the frame mount but the hardware in the rebuild kit is different. The rebuild washers are bigger and natural finish compared to the zinc finish of the hardware that came with the cylinder. Which ones are correct?

Ive attached a few photos if that helps.

    Thanks,
    Mike

The installed retainer is definitely not correct. The one you have installed is actually a shock or front sway bar link retainer. However, these are often used for the power steering cylinder rod retainer. In fact, if you have a cylinder rod that does not have a hole for a cotter pin, then this is the type retainer you need to use since it has some nut-locking functionality. You can also use a self locking type nut with a rod without the cotter pin hole. Of course, the original nut was a slotted nut used with a cotter pin.

The other retainer you picture appears "almost correct" to me. However, to me it looks a little bit too large with respect to OD. In any event, it's much closer to the original configuration of the retainer.

As I recall, the power steering cylinder-to-relay rod joint has only the boot; I don't recall any felt washer being used. I think that perhaps earlier Corvettes used the felt washer at this location but I don't think it was still being used by 1969.

After looking at your picture I am wondering if that felt washer goes inside the cylinder when you remove the spring clip.
