Using the same distance to the object, try more photos at different angles. Many times the true features of the mystery digit(s) show up more clearly.

I've seen many cast dates with unreadable digits due to debris in the mold before the molten pour. Here's a '63 I once owned. As you can see in some of the photos the digits become a tad clearer. I think I came up with B 12 3. The 1 is very faint but shows up at different angles. Assy date was 6 days later which made sense to me. A 300 hp Powerglide coupe completed Feb 27, 1963.

          Thanks Rich!

After doing some research in the NCRS guide and the Corvette Rest & Tech guide....I see that since the block stamp is F0224....it must be a 1960 block....since they did not use the "0" in from of the month number til 1960...correct?

IIRC it was approx. the middle of Jan. 1960 when they added the "0" to single digit months so that would make yours a 1960 block.

That block has been exposed to weather enough to destroy the date code and the casting about the block BUT the numbers on the pad are crisp along with the numbers and broach marks.
              What are we seeing here?

JR, My pictures are not Greg's engine, it's mine. Sorry for adding confusion if I did...

My objetive was to show different photographic angles of the poor cast date digits. Which BTW were not from the elements, it was simply a mold that wasn't properly cleaned before the next pour. That engine was in a running car all it's life until I bought it in 2007, with 67k original miles.

Getting off the subject a little but the digit 0 in F0218SD, the font does not look like a digit or a letter. Notice how the vertical lines that make up the 0 are parallel. I've seen this before on other engine stamps. It's suppose to be a digit but why the strange looking font..

Many fonts were used as seen below.

                      Re: Block Casting Date

I've tried many different Photoshop filters... nothing conclusive.
The fourth character is tricky... at times I want to say itz a '6'.
That is based on the curved left side, but indented right side.
Then again, the angle of the photo can throw everything off.
(the bottom image is the original)

Just trying to help... but not very well.
