I replaced heater core on my non air 71. It's the correct one and fits perfectly. Went to put the cover on and there is about a one inch gap toward the center of the car. I don't understand why the gap. Does anyone know what I did wrong? Thanks in advance for your help.

Are you saying that there's a 1 inch gap when you try to install the heater box back into the car? If so, I don't understand how one could get the heater box improperly positioned because the four mounting studs fix and control its position when installed into the car.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: outer heater core cover fit
Joe, first of all thanks for taking the time to respond, the outer heater box fits over the studs just fine and the rest of the opening except the side toward the center of the car. It comes up about 3/4 to 1 inch short of mating with the fire wall. I don, remember this when I took it apart about 8 months ago.- Top

My recollection is that the inner end of the box does not seat against the firewall. In any event, if the box is fully seated at the 4 stud mounting points, it pretty much has to be this way. There's no way that the inner end of the box is going to "bend".In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
