    Front cross member bolting

Sometime back I saw a posting on the bolting of the cross member to the frame. I believe that two of the fasteners where inverted when installed. I printed the posting so I would have it when it came time to put my frame/chassis back together. Guess what? It is that time and no sign of the copy I made. As a matter of fact I think I saw several posting talking about this. I tried a search but my luck hasn't been to great when doing so. As always, any help would be appreciated!

check threads from Tom Parsons (DZAuto). He has a few threads on assembly of C-1 front suspensions.

Chuck, I've taken 3 or 4 C1's apart last few years. Here's a '59 I took apart a few years ago and replaced the the bolts the same way. I somewhat recall a few were different from the AIM configuration, but I think those HAD to be installed the way in the photos or a wrench would not fit otherwise.

Thanks Richard. If I looked correctly I think these pictures show both the right and left, front two outside holes show the bolt heads while all the others show the nuts on top??? Do you know if all C1s are like this??

Chuck, As I recall several I've restored have the same configuration as shown above. Another '59, a '60, and a '61, and my own '59 which has never had the crossmember removed or the body removed from the frame. I cannot guarantee all C1's are the same. On the St Louis line anything could have happened. Quite frankly, I'm certain the assemblers had no preference to orientation. As long as they bolted it together the easiest way I'm sure it passed their needs.

As mentioned before, you'll see that some need to be a certain way or the socket wrench tools won't fit easily. I'm sure they used socket wrenches with air guns or similar, all for speed of assembly.
