Can this headlight washer solenoid be disassembled for re-plating?

As you can see, the gold cadmium plating on my '69 convertible's headlight washer solenoid bracket has mostly worn off.

Does anyone know if there is some way to safely remove the solenoid from the bracket so that the bracket can be re-plated? I am afraid to try to pry it off, as I am not sure if these can even be disassembled.

    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

No, I am not familiar with him. Does he do restorations of these parts? Do you have his contact info?

      Thanks,
      Paul

        Paul,
It absolutely can be disassembled and replated. I have done a couple. If I remember correctly, there is a metal sleeve that the plastic nozzle went through and runs through the solenoid. That can be driven out and the plated part comes away. There are also some date numbers and a part number ink stamped on the flat surface. Later today I will be in my shop and will verify the information I just reported and post a picture of the ink stamping. When I restored the unit on my car I had a rubber stamp made to re-stamp.

Awesome -- thanks, Jeff! This is very helpful. If you could post a photo of the ink stamping as you mentioned, I would greatly appreciate it.

Do you (or anyone) know of a good cadmium plater that would be willing to do a few small parts if sent via mail?

          Thanks again,
          Paul

            Paul,
Here is a picture of the plated/dichromated solenoid. The ink stamp has faded since I did it some years ago. I also checked a spare solenoid I have and I confirmed that there is a steel sleeve inside the solenoid that has to be driven out. I used an appropriate sized socket and tapped it out. Once out, the plated part lifts off.

Thanks again, Jeff! I really appreciate it. Where did you have your plating done?

Also, how did you create that stamp? I have been wondering about this for a while, as I have heard of others doing it as well. Is there some kind of kit that you can buy to create stamps?

                Paul,
The plating and dichromate wash I did myself using a Caswell Plating set up. I am sure that somewhere in your area you can find a shop that does zinc plating and dichromating. Google "Zinc plating (your city)". As far as the stamp- You can have a rubber stamp made at most office supply stores or stores that do business cards very inexpensively. I purchased a kit that allowed me to put individual letters and numbers anywhere on a stamp pad. I purchased it at a Staples store. The individual numbers and letters are quite small and difficult to set up but it worked well.

Awesome -- thanks again, Jeff! I may have to get one of those Caswell kits... just checked-out their website, and it seems intriguing!

                  Much appreciated,
