C2 A/C Evaporator Box - Color

The JG calls out the '65 A/C Evaporator box as "gloss black" - clarification is needed. Are we talking the asphalt-based "gloss black" that is sprayed on frames, etc., and has become semi-gloss before a body can be put on it or a state of the are "gloss black" that you can shave while looking at it as a mirror. Those were my college days and I can remember looking, wishfully, at such cars and there is NO way that the gloss on a evaporator box had 1/2 of the "gloss" of a chevy orange engine.

I have an original paint 64 evaporator box and it is high gloss black very smooth and glossy

Mounted in the car? "....very smooth and glossy" 53 years later? Why do I suspect that it's not the original Harrison black...

Loren - when my 67 AC outer evap case was removed around 1990 - it was greasy, grimy, gophers guts over Black. Once cleaned - who knows. Therefore I cannot verify the Pantone value ... Although the odometer showed some 9,000 miles - it was most likely 109,000. Well worn.

Dino, thanks for the pictures - I do believe that is original Harrison evaporator paint, but I believe most would concede that the probable starting point was "semi-gloss" black or the low-grade asphalt based gloss black used on frames. If you believe it is "high gloss black", please never volunteer as a judge in the "Exterior" category.
But perhaps the point is the lack of comment from the Judging Team and the judges who are implementing "gloss black"; there is another thread dealing with exhaust blackout on '63s - if you read the "poles apart" reports of judging results for that topic, it has apparently never been judged the same way two times in a row.
