    Tires for judging a '69?

    Hi all,

Are there any reproduction tires available for a '69 that will not receive a judging deduction?

I am looking at a set of reproduction Goodyear Wide Tread bias plys, and I am being told that the only way to tell they are reproductions is by the serial number. Is this true? If so, I assume they would still receive a deduction. Is anything better available without going NOS? (Even if I could find NOS tires, I would be concerned about driving on such old rubber.)

    Thanks,
    Paul

Paul, beyond the serial number there is also the DOT logo on the tire. Mandated by the DOT. It's a small standard deduction for reproduction tires.

I'm sure the price of NOS tires far exceeds most budgets and certainly is not worth the standard deduction for reproduction tires. Besides that you would never drive on NOS tires anyway, they are unsafe.

Essentially, take the point hit and worry about other larger point deduction areas.

1969 Original tires would have the DOT marking. 1968 and earlier do not.

Paul - Your advice is correct. The Goodyear RWL (not sure about the white stripe) reproduction tires are pretty much "spot on" and the only detectable difference is the debossed numbers/letters on the sidewall. All new tires (including reproduction tires) have a long code of 11 or 12 letters and numbers, the last 3 which represent the week and year. Original DOT tires from 1969 and 1979 have a shorter code of 8 or 9 numbers/letters which contain manufactures information but the last 3 are not the date as in this the later tires.

I also have the Goodyear Wide Tread repros from Kelsey Tires ($$$), the standard deduction is 2 pts.. How much $$$ is 2 pts. worth to you?
FYI - I believe the repro Goodyear's judge better than the repro Firestone's due to an incorrect tire tread.

          Mike,
It should have been 3 points. That is the standard deduction for that tire assuming the judges see that the debossed numbers are not like the originals. If you didn't have them the deduct would be greater than that.

            Dave,
Two Regional's, 2 pts. at each.

It's only 2 points if you have a original spare. If not it's an error as it should be 3 points.
