I am doing a frame off restoration on a 350/350 convertible. Over the years I have accumulated a lot of pieces of ignition shielding. I have attached a picture of 2 pieces of shielding from the driver side rear. The bottom picture is a NOS part with the blue/white/black GM part label and part number 3923969. This part number is shown in the 1969 Assemble Manual. The top picture has an indention that I assume is to clear the the Z-Bar shaft. Just curious about when the top shield was used. Is it just a modification of the 3923969 shield? I plan to use the bottom shield after having it rechromed, but just curious when this change occurred ?

Re: 1969 Ignition Shielding Question
Steve------
The left rear shield from my original owner 1969 did not have the relief seen in the top shield in your photo. It had the shield as shown in the bottom of your photo. There was one difference, though: my shield looked like it had been "adjusted" to provide for cross-shaft clearance by "bashing it in slightly". This had to have been done at the factory since I sure didn't do it. So, the shield on the top might be from a later model. It's possible the shield was modified at some point without a change in part number. If so, though, the NOS piece you have must be really old.
Also, as I recall and without my checking, I seem to recall that this shield on my car was stainless steel, not chrome. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1969 Ignition Shielding Question
Steve,
FYI the shield from my '68 327/350 4-speed, which I believe to be original is identical to the top shield in the picture.
It is stainless steel, not chrome plated.
Hope this helps, or just add to the confusion!- Top
