    Tach cable

Got an odd Tach issue. In warm months the tach works just great, In colder months, like now it will make a little noise but after the car warms up it goes quiet. Does the cable need to be lubed or is there another issue? Thanks!

The first thing I would try is lubing the cable. However, since it's kind of a hassle to get it out (it must be removed from the instrument end), you might just want to replace the inner cable. Have a speedometer shop make you up one using your old cable as a guide for exact length.

Hmmm... So I'm guessing the repro cables are wrong length. And.. I've never heard of a speedometer shop. Ideas??

No, I'm not saying the repro cables are wrong. However, most, if not all, of the INNER cables out there these days are a "one size fits all" type which are cut to length and have a supplied cable end staked on by the installer. I don't like that kind.

Most major city areas will have a speedometer shop. Sometimes, these do other things, too. Check your yellow pages.

I pulled the inner cable from the sleeve and it appears to be in OK shape, I can get it back in there without much fuss. What's the correct type of lubricant??

First, use Cable Ease as it's the right viscosity for all temperatures and seasons.

In the case of tachometers and speedometers people usually go by the "more is better" and that is wrong to begin with.

If there is a problem with noise or sluggish pointers the cable casing needs to be cleaned of old hardened grease. Usually lacquer thinner will accomplish this task by filling and soaking. Then pour out the thinner and run something like a pipe cleaner thru the casing.

The best thing to do is use a new tach cable or speedometer cable. They are clean and lubed correctly by the manufacturer. AND they are cheap and stocked by all the warehouse sellers. Do not lube new cables.

The tach cable I got from LI for a C2 had a noticeably smaller in diameter housing and the distributor end nut did not screw onto the distributor smoothly. The hex crimp also had sharp edges that will cut your hands while you are fumbling to get the poorly threaded nut on the distributor. It was exactly the same length as the original though. When I found my original I decided to use re- use it instead. Anybody need a C2 tach cable?

I found this thread in the archives as I am dealing with the tach cable and housing in my 65. My housing is good, I would like to clean and reuse it. If I have a new cable made up, does the small collar on the tach end of the cable transfer to the new one or would the speedometer shop have one to install as part of the new cable?

No part of the existing inner cable can be transferred to the new cable.
