1963 Temp Gauge Pointer Departs Shaft

Is there a simple manner to test a 63 temp gauge "ex parte" (outside the gauge pod) by a deplorable simple one?

    Geoff,

Yes, just take a 1.5 volt battery any size and a couple of jumper wires. Connect the wires to the gauge connectors and touch the wires to the battery. The pointer should deflect in one direction. Reverse the wires and it should deflect in the other direction.
Also you can remove the gauge from the cluster without removing the cluster completely. Just disconnect the plug and three screws holding that pod and drop it down. Put a wrench on the base of the oil gauge to keep it from turning and screwing up the coil. At least I did it a couple of times earlier in life. Might not be a easy now as I am more mature but it beats fighting with all those wires.
Good luck and hope your not too sore when finished.

PS. The reply before was for an amp gauge. Too early in the morning to be thinking! Hope I fixed the response for a temp gauge.

The temp gauge can be tested by:
        1) warm engine to operating temp
        2) Using a jumper connect the gauge case to a good ground.
        3) Disconnect the temp sensor on the engine (Dark Green wire)
        4) Using a jumper connect the left pole on the gauge to the temp sensor
        5) Using a jumper connect +12v to the side of the gauge that would connect to the pink wire (Probably the right side pole on the gauge)
If the gauge deflects to the negative, switch the jumper positions on the gauge
You should see the actual engine temp on the gauge

          Thanks Stephen.
Rain sleet today; snow arrives tomorrow; more Thursday. Bummer, I can't lift hood in the garage. Car lifts only allow stacking; not opening hood to any measure. Will try this test in the spring after hibernation. Sounds pretty simple.
