    C2 ash tray

I have never been able to remove the ash tray in my May built 67 roadster. The bracket fastened to the fiberglass that supports the console shows no sign of damage or prior removal. If I were to reinstall this bracket to allow the ash tray to be removed, the console would not align with the side panels or the fiberglass of the transmission tunnel. What advice would you give regarding judging?

    Thank you,

    Randy

    Randy,
Re-read what you wrote here. I'm not quite clear as to whether the console is currently out of the car and the brackets are removed or what. The ashtray can sometimes be a bit testy to pop out, by if you fidget with it and "align" it in its' opening in the console, you should be able to remove it. During Flight judging, you will be asked to remove the ashtray for observation. Judges are looking for "AAC" stamping on the original ashtray.

Everything is in place. Nothing has been removed. It is impossible to remove the ashtray.

        Randy,

The console location can make getting the ashtray out difficult. Try lifting the rear edge of the ashtray while holding the front edge down. If that doesn't work, try loosening the screws that hold the console in place to see if you can shift the console slightly toward the rear.

I have heard that the reproduction ashtray is slightly larger than the originals . This may be the issue ...peter ..they tend to be a bear to get in and out...

Well, if it's been in there for 50 years, I suppose it could be "welded" to the rubber boot that surrounds it in its console pocket. Again, it may be very difficult to remove, but not impossible. Worse case scenario, remove the screws from alongside the console, lift the console and "encourage" the ashtray removal from behind.

I have disassembled the console, shifter boot along with the entire car. I was not able to remove the original ash tray. The reproduction won't come out either. The right edge of the tray is tucked under the console, preventing removal. I believe the problem is original to the car since I don't recall ever being able to remove the ash tray.

              Thank you for your replies.

                Randy,

You are right. The ash tray problem on your 67 is original to the car. I have had my 67 since Dec 68 and always had a problem removing the original ash tray (and when it was actually used as an ash tray). I remember having to pry it out to empty it, and the little rim on the top would always get stuck under the console on passenger side.

Years later in the NCRS mode, I tried to pull it out by the stubout part, and that broke off. I then went to a reproduction and after the same problem re-occurred, I ground off the passenger side rim on the top of the ash tray. It would then come out easy but their would always be points off in judging.

As an interior judge on 67's and other C2's, and remembering how I broke mine, I always tell the owner that if there is any difficulty in getting the ash tray out during judging, just leave it in place. We would judge it based up how it looks in place and give the owner the benefit of the doubt.

There is a nice article in the current restorer on C2 ash trays.
