Getting ready to install new carpet in my 1959 and I see in the aftermarket catalogs they have a listing for 4 carpet screws per car. I see a hole in the floorboard behind the accelerator pedal and one other on the passenger side at the transmission tunnel that probably were for screws, but I can't find any other holes that would have been for carpet screws. Does anyone have any pictures of where these screws would have been placed in the carpet? I can't find my JG and the AM does not show any detail for these. Also, I noticed 2 holes approximately 1/4" in diameter in each side of the front of the floor pan at the recessed area for the body mount bolts near the area where the pan begins it's angle to the firewall. Where these factory or placed there by the 2nd owner? Thanks as always! Al

Re: 1959 Carpet Screws -Where?
Al, Not sure about those 1/4" holes but likely a PO did that.
For the carpet, yes 4 total. 2 at the lower inside corners where you see the screw holes, and 2 more up high at the inside corners. The AIM actually does show the 2 screws and placement on the Drivers Side. In the Section where it shows the carpet. The DS upper screw is shown already installed. I don't have my AIM handy but Noland's book here at my desk has it on pg 211 if you have it there.
However, it is possible that the factory missed those upper inner corners. I've seen many with missing holes, even my own '59, of which has had it's 3rd carpet set in my 30 years of driving it. I had to drill the uppers on mine.
On others, I simply drill my own holes then install the screws. I must mention, when you do this, use a punch to open the holes in the carpet for the screws, then take a soldering iron tip or similar and burn the hole a bit to fuse the fibers of the carpet. This will prevent the screw threads from grabbing the carpet loop and tearing it apart and making a long run in it. Just snug up the screw into the sharp edged trim washer so it doesn't cut a new hole in the carpet too.
Use of a screwdriver is best, not a screw gun, and slowly screw them in so if you do catch the carpet loop you can feel it and stop so you don't have to call the carpet folks and place a order for a new floor piece.

PS This POST has a few pics of the lower screw. Couldn't find one of the uppers.- Top

Re: 1959 Carpet Screws -Where?
It'll be difficult, if not impossible, to locate the existing holes with the carpet in place. I wanted to use the existing screw holes because i hate putting additional holes in my car. I located the holes from underneath the car, and inserted a pin through the hole and up into the carpet. Now I know where the screw holes are.
Not sure, but I think I remember some members posting that their cars did not have 2 screws per side. If it were my car, and I only found 1 hole per side, that's all I would replace.- Top

Another way to locate and mark carpeting.....Install a Phillips screw in the hole. Lay the carpet down and press hard against the screw head. It will put a impression of the screw head in the carpet backing. Now you have a exact placement mark for your punch or X-Acto blade to pierce.
This is also my method for installing the Dimmer-Switch grommet around the carpet. However for the later years that don't have foam backing, I just put a piece of Duct Tape on the back of the carpet. Press the carpet hard against the dimmer foot button. It leaves a nice impression in the tape for the center hole then I trim it out bigger for the grommet.

Re: 1959 Carpet Screws -Where?
Thanks guys for the responses and tips. I have located all 4 holes in mine. The upper ones were the hardest ones to locate from underneath due to the location. Hopefully the carpet will be in this week and I can get it installed. I've got to go by today and pick up the driver's side power window switch that a friend was rebuilding for me and get it back in.- Top
