69 sealer used around heater box on firewall

    69 L46

There was some type of sealer used on the heater blower plenum around the edges where attached to the firewall. It looks like it was used only on the top edge. Was this done at the factory? If so, what type of product could I use today to replicate this? I see where Eastwood has a gray, brushable seam sealer but this "stuff" looks black to me. Also, where else was this stuff used? Was it brushed on or sprayed?

It wasn't very neat and tidy.....

    Thanks,
    Rich

The same material was used on the grommets that passed through the firewall. I suspect it was also used in the windshield wiper plenum. I have been told that liquid roofing sealer (without fiber added) is a fair facsimile. You may have to add something to the roof sealer to dull it down a bit. Perhaps some talc or foot/baby powder sprinkled on it as it dries. Roofing sealer is available at big box home improvement stores or hardware stores. It is inexpensive enough for you to experiment with to get the gloss level down to acceptable levels. Neatness doesn't count.

Thanks Terry. Slopping roofing sealer on my "new" shiny corvette is giving me angst. But I will get some and give it a try. Might have to thin it down some too.

I understand the angst. The deduction shouldn't be much for the lack of sealer, a couple of points at most. You might consider that if Chevrolet didn't think it was necessary to apply it, they wouldn't have.

Rich, I would leave the original stuff on the housing and just clean it up around it carefully. If its not to late, Marks reply is Correct, the goop has not yet been replicated. I believe it was sprayed on?

I would say it was sprayed or "squirted" in some fashion. All I have ever seen had what looked like air bubbles that had popped all over. Chip.

I hear rumor that a wise old sage, that lives deep in the swamp in FL, may have concocted a close replication. Thing is, he rarely ventures out of the swamp and is reluctant to divulge secrets.

LOL........Actually the swampster's son has the recipe. I've tasted it and it's the real thing.

Too late to leave the original on the box. The whole engine compartment had been black spray painted at one point in its life, over top of oil grease and grime. The heater box was not excluded. I couldn't get the layers of paint off without taking off the sealer too. I will try mixing up some concoction with liquid roofing sealer and other special "swamp" ingredients to try to replicate the nasty stuff. Heading to the hardware store now for a consult.

                    thanks much guys.

                      Rich,

I have an unrelated question about your '69 L46. I just PM'd you. At your convenience. Thanks.
