Steering wheel hub clearance 65 Corvette

How do you adjust the gap between the direction signal housing and the steering wheel hub on a 1965 Corvette?

    Steve,

Try loosening the connection at the rag joint and see if the steering shaft can be moved to compensate. If not there, the bolts under the dash are designed with adjustment slots for the steering wheel shaft housing. I would look at adjusting at the rag joint first.

      Ok. Thanks. I'll try that.

If it's anything like my '66, you want to loosen the bolts under the dash and the clamp on the engine side and slide the steering mast in or out to get the gap you're looking for. That is how the Chassis Service Manual outlines the procedure. You'll find that loosening the rag joint and trying to adjust the steering shaft will be very difficult.

Steve, The directional switch clamps the housing to the steering column tube. The upper bearing is part of the switch assembly. If you open the gap without keeping pressure on your upper bearing you will have a sloppy column. You will feel a lot of play up and down, side to side in your steering wheel. The directional cancelling cam should keep pressure on the bearing. If the cam or the bearing is worn this will affect your gap between the hub and housing. One or both may be bad.

You are right about the rag joint. The steering rod is pushed in as far as it can go anyway. I'll look at loosening the other clamps as you suggest. Thanks.

Joseph, Sounds like what I am experiencing. Thanks for the suggestion.
