I've seen a number of 70-72 owner's manuals (originals, with Corvette News card inside) that have had a 4-digit hand-written code on the back cover.
I finally figured out why, through my contact with a local dealership friend and a recent ebay purchase.
Many dealers had/have stock numbers, and rather have a file on a car with the entire VIN, they would often use a 4-digit code for each different car.
They didn't leave paperwork (owner's manual, trim ring sheet, consumer information booklet, etc.) in the car for fear of theft, so they stored that paperwork, and then included it at delivery with the sale of the car.
In order to keep things straight, some purchased a stock number card with adhesive on it and stuck it on the inside of the windshield, and wrote the same code on the back of the owner's manual.
Attached are pics of a stock number card, front and back, and an accompanying owner's manual, front and back.
