    63 tail pipe extensions

Tried to dig this out of the archives but was unsuccessful.

Was their a recent JG change stating factory tailpipes should NOT have part numbers ?

Frank, per the JG Without Part Number

The extension installed on the line was magnetic stainless steel, no part number and very thin metal, about .0270 thick. The seam at the bottom was either at the 5 or 7 clock position not at the 6 clock position.

Thanks Harry, I recrafted my search query just now and came up with the same answer via John DeGregory from 2008.
Too bad, I picked up a gorgeous NOS set still in the GM box for free...oh well!!!

Frank, NOS erxtensions are service replacements for 63. Harry. Are you sure about the 5o and 7:00 Position. My original ones are 6:00. Am or PM.
I was one of the horders that stocked up on exhaust tips or whatever you call them. When my 63 was being restored I found out they weren't worth a crap for a '63. Had to get my bent up ones restored. No part number, very think and 6:00 seam. John D

John, I know, never say never on a 63. New stuff pops all the time. All I've ever seen is 5 and 7 on the clock. We can always add 6 to the list.

Have a print for the 3819573 dated 2-24-62 with second rev on 8-30-62. Print calls for seam to be at 30 degrees +/- 1 degree, now the 30 could be to either side and still meet spec since the direction was never spec. Thickness called for is .023 +/- .0025

              Frank,

What's the thickness of the service tips you have.

I have several originals with NO part number and just like John D. says the seam is at 6 without exception.

About 0.025 in the spots measured....much thinner than what is on the car now (those are prob repros)...seam is at 6 o'clock and part number on the pieces...

Frank, that's why the 63 only rear heat shields are good, covers the numbers when installed.

                      I didn't think about that !

They were going on the car anyway - they are clearly better than the thick repros on there now (don't know where they came from)...

I agree Joe. I owned two '63's. One from CA and one from PA CA car had 50K on it. My 63 the LWC from PA has about 30K on it. Both cars had the identical exhaust tips. Seam at 6:00. I have know that minor detail for an eon.
Jorjorian will tell you that. He will also say you never see a pair of NOS 63's. But tons of the later style. The '63's are very thin and bend easily. JD

Here is a set of originals I'm restoring. Close to 6 but not spot on.

My 63 tips are clocked about 30 degrees both and I have a set of 64's I will take a look and post them tomorrow.

My original beat up ones are in a box. I'll check them as well for curiosity sake. I recall the tips of the cut off end look like they were kissed by a Mustang or something. He probably couldn't brake with me, Ha!
