What do you think about this exhaust tip? It's clearly not a stainless steel reproduction. What do you think about his one--good repro or NOS?

Paul,
Thanks!
How do I tell that it is not a reproduction?
By "over the counter" are you distinguishing between GM in the box vs installed on the line? If so, again, how do I tell?

Mike
1. It appears that it has never been installed on a car. So that would indicate a service part.
2. As for the originality the chrome is very thin showing all the striations in the metal and also it appears inside has very little to no chrome.
3. The thickness of the metal appears to be correct
4. Last but not least the welding of the seams is good to very bad which was "A" typical of the era's production.
The weld on the bottom seam indicates 2nd design that started showing up in very late 1970 and continued to the end of production in 1972. Earlier 1970 had no seam on the bottom. Here are some originals both first and second design tips.
The last photo is the best current reproduction has heavy or thick chrome and the welds are almost perfect.- Top

Paul,
Thanks for taking the time to respond. Another question, then. The GM later replacement piece with a change in welding and with the part numbers stamped in would be a third (and incorrect) type?- Top

Very useful for the right 71-72 car.
Paul's photos definitely show the chrome difference, even more than what I've detected in real life.
However, the current $$$ repros are better than the W tips or the stainless tips with regard to judging.

There are about
1. 70 style no bottom seam
2. Late 70-72 with weld seam on bottom
3. Complete welding around the round pipe to box
4. Several tack welds around the round pipe to the box
5. Spot welding the round pipe to box
6. Spot welding back plate to the box cover
7. "W" only on the bottom with all seams welded except the round pipe is spot welded
8. "W" welded on bottom spot weld box to backing plate
9. "W" with part number with variation on welding like above.
Plus there could be other but that is what I have seen over the years. Both Terry and Patrick are correct with their statements.- Top

Re: 70-71 Exhaust tip style 1--Good repro, or?
I have two chrome exhausts tips that I ordered fro the Chevrolet parts counter in the 80's. There is only one welded area connecting the metal on the bottom of the exhaust tip. The back is not welded. Both have a part number on the bottom of the exhaust tip. GM3974660 with a W below the numbers. I would have one that has the part number GM3974659 that is on the box that it came in but some one screwed up and put another GM3974660 in the wrong box. So I have two for the right side exhaust. I could install one GM397660 upside down to use it. This error was not discovered until a few years ago when I opened the sealed boxes they came in. I will never leave the parts counter again until I examine what is in the boxes. These are really nice looking exhaust tips. I don't know how my 1970 originals were made, they were replaced with stainless steel ones many, many years ago.- Top

Believe they came from Walker. Walker made most of the exhaust systemDick Whittington- Top
