I am looking to purchase a new thermostat and online doing some research. I came across a Reverse Poppet Thermostat which I am not familiar with. It notes that its activated by coolant flow by the water pump. What are the pros and cons of this type thermostat vs. a traditional type? I am looking at Gates thermostats. thanks

Re: Reverse Poppet Thermostat?
I haven't heard of a reverse poppet thermostat either.
"activated by coolant flow by the water pump"... There must be more to it since there is always coolant flow by the pump while the engine is running.Mark Edmondson

Re: Reverse Poppet Thermostat?
As I understand it, some modern engines use the "reverse poppet" style thermostats to allow coolant to circulate through the engine before the thermostat opens to minimize "hot spots" in the cooling system as the engine warms up. Our engines are not designed for this type of thermostat and they should not be used. I'm surprised you were able to find one for your application.- Top

− The reverse poppet thermostat opens against the flow of coolant from the water pump. The coolant, under water pump pressure, is used to help the reverse poppet thermostat stay closed when cool to reduce leakage. This type is engineered with a self-cleaning, self-aligning stainless steel valve

Re: Reverse Poppet Thermostat?
So for L98 and older engines, the poppet opens down instead of up.
Interesting design. I wonder if it makes any difference from a functional perspective?Mark Edmondson
