    I gotts some thank you!

    Maybe I need a refill!

That's the reason GM changed to plain rivets and then to rosettes later on C-2's.

First I agree with Terry M, if there are any doubts consult with the team leader.

The casting date is clearly not per "design intent" but is typical of Saginaw production reality as Mork Gorney frequently spoken of.

In this case the numbers appear to work if the day designator in the cast date is early enough in the month. Preceding the engine built date and not a late month date after the engine build and too tight in relation to the car build.

From the trim tag the car was assembled in the 5th week of February (F5). From the birthday book the car started assembly on the 26th of February and was completed that day or the following day. Engine machining and final assembly from the built stamp is the 18th of February. About 8 to 9 days before the build of the car. These dates work.

The last character in the casting date I believe is a 3. The first I think is a B. At first I thought the the day designator was a single digit, until Rich said he first thought it was a 12. Both work.

As it is the sun and the moon and the stars appear to line up. Unless the day characters are actually too late in February.

From the photos presented I would apply the benefit of the doubt to the casting date.

Another member here recently sought help with the numbers on his '57 283. He took a mold from the casting date with plumbers putty which worked well in his case. I have attached a photo for example.

Rich might I suggest trying that? Just for fun.

I have attached a photo of that impression which I flipped for ease of reading. Before the impression the casting date was something of a challenge.

Thanks Dan, I came to the conclusions that you did to help me authenticate the purchase. Car is no longer here so I cannotget a imprint, but a good idea.

BTW, I wanted to show this cast date as a example of whet the main question was. I think your explanation was spot on for this case and other cases also.

Richard, I wasn't aware that this was a low miles / documented original car! Makes it even more interesting. I have seen some GM drivetrain components painted about that shade of yellow, but they were usually cut away displays with many chrome plated components. I think our High School Auto Shop class may have had one and I have seen them in automotive museums. I always wondered why yellow. Chip.
