    1970 Exhaust Tip Extension Clamp?

This is the exhaust tip extension clamp that was on my 1970. The one nut would not come off and destroyed the threads in the removal process. I don't remember if I bought these or if they were on the car since I purchased it. I'm getting ready for San Antonio and wanted to make sure I don't lose points unnecessarily.

Is this a "correct" style clamp, a repro, or just an over the counter clamp? (No idea what the 2171 indicates?)
Trying to figure out if I need to replace what I have with an exact duplicate (with flattened U-bolt) or if any old saddle clamp will do?

    The GM part #'s are, Item 2, 3952741 - U bolt & Item 6, 3982171 Clamp.

    Thx,

Yes Mike that is the correct style clamp for that application. I don't recall the numbers being stamped there, but a letter is often seen on the top (or exposed) part of the flattened U-bolt. My best recollection is that letter is a "K," but it would be best to wait for a comment from one of the C3 chassis judges for confirmation.

Your recollections are correct, mine does in fact have the "K" stamped on the U-bolt. Any ideas as where to get a replacement?

          Hi Mike,

Looks like that clamp IS the Paragon reproduction. Appears that there is a tiny bit of plating on the clamp. There are some differences versus the originals and there was an excellent thread with pictures. Overall decent reproduction IMHO.

          Kind Regards,

          Bill

I have some NOS clamps with the "K" logo on the flat portion and they are natural, silver cadmium, and gray phosphate. My observations from looking at original exhausts tells me that they are the same finish as I just mentioned. Have seen one side natural and the other plated. Again, this is the top portion. The bottom part that I have seen is always natural.

Mike Furline if this was mine and was on my original owner 1970 exhaust I would just rethread the stripped portion and use a another nut. I have not entered my car yet for any judging events, but if I did I would let them take points off if it was noticed.

Mike, I think Jim has the right idea. I am a chassis judge for the 70 model year, and I cannot speak for judging colleuges, but I may not even notice the rethread, and if I did I probably would not take a deduction for it.
