My early 1967 Corvette (Build Nov 1, 1966) has the wrong manual steering gear box and i would like to replace it with a correct one. My question is, what am i looking for as to part numbers and possibly a source to purchase.

Donald,
You're looking for part #5666723. I would try Bair's for this unit. They advertise in the Driveline.Leif

Donald------
1963 thru L1969 steering boxes are the same except that 1969 uses an aluminum cover. What makes you think that the one you have is wrong? In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1967 Corvette Steering Gear Box
Joe is correct, just one difference- the 63 covers were thinner and didn't have the "add lube" cast in them. All the 63's I have rebuilt did not have the "add lube" I should say since some evidently did. I have rebuilt 100's of boxes but I don't have a count of the 63's only in case someone wants to know.
I would be more concerned about the condition of the box or it if has ever been rebuilt. Some here can testify their boxes were supposed to be rebuilt and when I inspected them found otherwise.- Top

In that case, all you probably need to change is the cover and lash screw.
However, it is possible that what you have is the L1969-82 steering gear. If so, the other difference would be the configuration of the input shaft and steering coupler. However, I don't think that difference is really even detectable with the steering box mounted in the car. I sure wouldn't replace the steering box just for that reason. No way in the world. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1967 Corvette Steering Gear Box
Don, Joe
It is very possible you have one of the many knock off boxes on the market today. The ones I have seen are junk. They do not have the road "S" on the back, have an aluminum lock ring not steel, and have those allen lash bolts. The best place I found for those is the recycle scrap bin. Now it could be some hack was working on that box in the past and screwed it up, I have had those come in too. All 63-82 boxes used a slotted lash screw and 5/8" hex 7/16-20 jam nut which is not common at all. The knock off use an 11/16" jam not.
If you post some pictures of the box we will know pretty quick. The knock offs used gears that were supposed to be made on the old Saginaw machines but the companies that had them and went of business in the past, twice, did not know how to set up a steering box. About 12-15 years ago many vendors advertised and sold these boxes and the ones I was sent were all bad. They needed complete rebuilds and it wasn't worth it for a non Saginaw box.- Top

Re: 1967 Corvette Steering Gear Box
Here is a 63 box
Here is a 64-68, I used to add the red paint lines so the owner would know if his alignment shop did him a favor and adjusted the box, wrecking my setup! I don't do that anymore because the lines stand out too much. Easy to remove but some didn't like it.
If yours doesn't look like these you don't have a Saginaw box. It could be black as most were black but the features are the same- Top
