Correct fan clutch for '69 small block?

    Hi all,

The fan clutch on my base '69 350/300 HP convertible is a service replacement, and I am trying to determine what the correct one looks like. There seems to be a lot of conflicting info out there.

Does anyone have any photos that they can post? Also, any opinions on where to source an original one and have it restored?

    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

Your NCRS Judging Manual should tell you which types are/were used for your car. I know for 1967, both the Schwitzer bar type and the Eaton coil type were used.

The bar type is now being reproduced, but is not exact with all the lettering and logos, but it works well. The Eaton coil type service replacement should be available if you search, but again will not have all the correct ink stamps and logos. It may also require "clocking" the coil spring to adjust the thermal lock up point.

Vinny at Pampered Vettes and Kirkconnell are two places that rebuild originals. I would simply call them and see if they stock units for sale. I am almost certain they both do. Their ads are usually in the Driveline, or just Google the names for contact information.

Again, your Judging Manual has the details of what you seek.

Thanks, Larry. I have reviewed the judging guide, but it is hard to know from the description exactly what the Schwitzer clutch for a '69 small block should look like. There seem to be many slightly different variations that various vendors claim to be "correct".

Here is the Kirkconnell website. Note that they have pictures of all the various clutch fans...........pictures update every 5 seconds. I can't help any more than this...........as I am a mid-year guy and my knowledge of the C3 cars is limited.

Perhaps others will help out with more specifics.

The website also has prices for both your rebuilds and for outright sales.

            Paul,
The Switzer identified as the "dog dish L-88" on the website is more like the original on my '69 350-300 than the one identified as the one used on small block cars. I can't take a photo since it is installed on my car. Maybe someone has one off the car that can be photo'd.

Thanks, Jeff! That is exactly what is causing my confusion. I was able to find this photo of a NOS 3916139 fan clutch...

However, most of the information I can find suggests that an original 3916139 fan clutch should look more like this:

I believe you are saying that yours looks like the second set of photos -- is that correct, Jeff?

              Thanks,

                Paul,
The AIM list the first clutch pictured as 1 of 3 used in production. It is listed as 3916139. The Parts & Acces. catalogue lists 3916141 as the service replacement but this part number may include studs/bolts and would then not match the production number. My clutch is the second set of photos. Since the 139 clutch pictured is in an original GM parts box, I would guess that that is the one in the AIM with the same part number.

The GM #3916139 is the fan clutch that was originally installed on my original owner 1969 350/300. It is pictured in your first photo.

Your second set of photos depicts a GM #3937771. It was used, among other applications, for 1969 350/300 with C-60.

                    That's what my '69 is: 350/300 with C60.
