    HEI replacement distributor

I need to replace the HEI distributor in my 1978 El Camino (no tach drive). However I'm stumped by the numerous possibilities available from Summit, NAPA, Rock Auto, Jegs and the rest, especially when I find out that most are Chinese built (including MSD !). It's a humble 305, a/t, but it has served me well for 30 years and I want to keep it going. Can someone with similar experience offer advice? I don't mind spending the money but want to buy a good unit that's durable and reliable.
    THX to all in advance.

    Re: HEI replacement distributor

I have a new HEI from a crate ZZ4 that I never used except for the melonized gear that I swapped. $25 plus shipping if interested.

I'll take it if you think it'll work. I assume it's complete (cap, rotor, coil, module, etc). Don't exactly know what "melonized" means but I guess I can just swap my old distributor gear for the one on yours. Please email <landeira@colorado.edu> or call me at 303-651-2599 and let's work out the details. And thank you for reaching out.

Sorry to say that I have not received your email. Please check the spelling of my last name. Just in case, it's <landeira@colorado.edu>. If that doesn't work, just call, I'll be home the rest of the day.

A melonized distributor drive gear is used when the engine is equipped with a GM hydraulic roller cam as well as certain other hydraulic roller cams. If your 1978 El Camino has its original cam, it will not be an hydraulic roller cam and will, thus, not require the melonized drive gear.

Joe, thanks to Donald Ling I have an original GM crate motor HEI on its way. I need to install the gear from my old one onto his and then I should be good to go. And, thank you, for the melonized explanation, I guess I had heard of the necessary switch a long time ago and had since forgotten.
