Re: How to prevent new brake rotors or a new flywheel from rusting while in storage
Gary------For new brake rotors, or half shafts, or a new flywheel that I don’t plan to use for a few years, is there something I can coat them with to keep the surface from developing a rust bloom? I plan to keep then inside my house, but even there the humidity will eventually result in surface rust.
Thanks,
Gary
Use "cosmoline" or a "cosmoline-like" compound. Eastwood used to sell an excellent "cosmoline-like", spray-on compound. I don't know if they still do, though. I've used it and it's GREAT. Before use, the material is easily removed with just about any solvent. In fact, the Eastwood product was/is almost identical to that once used by GM on SERVICE 65-82 Corvette rotors (but only those OEM quality rotors sold through the GM parts system, not Delco).
Otherwise, you can spray them with WD-40 but you'll need to periodically re-spray them. An application will last quite awhile, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

I have used Fluid Film as well. I setup a machine shop to work on my cars and sprayed the lathe and Bridgeport with it. I left it on for now but if you spray it on and wipe it down after 30 minutes it leaves a wax like film. Now with your parts I would test anything you go to use on a scrap bare metal piece first and then see if it cleans off later without any film left. Waxy rotors and flywheels don't work so good!- Top

Re: How to prevent new brake rotors or a new flywheel from rusting while in storage
I have used "RPM Rust Prevention Magic" and I think it works great. They can be found at npdlink.com. I used it ou a freshly blasted rear shock that was being replaced. I then set it outside on the lid of a metal bucket for the past 3 years. After 2 years it only showed minor surface rust. This summer it is showing more rust but that is complete year round St Louis area weather including being in a puddle after a rain. I highly recommend it for any bare metal except braking surfaces. Take a look at the website. They have all the instructions.
