    Vin tag question

Just wondering where these numbers between "Chevrolet" and the vin would have come from. Were they added by the dealer and if so, what are their significance or maybe just bored employees at the plant. Thanks for the help.

The photo does not show enough for me to say, for sure. You should have included a photo of the ENTIRE VIN plate. However, dealers were supposed to stamp the VIN plate with the date of delivery of the vehicle. Not all actually did but I'll venture a guess that the dealer that initially sold this car did and that's what you're seeing.

Sven, As Joe stated, we are not sure of your year or the stamp. My '65 has a crude stamp of the month and year that the car was sold that we assume was done by the delivery dealer (like Joe said). It passed when judged. Don H.

Here is a photo of the entire vin tag. Can't seem to load the photo right side up. Was concerned how these extra numbers would affect judging. Thanks for your comments.

You should not receive any deductions. As I recall dealers were asked by GM to stamp the tag with the date of sale. Some did most didn't.

I realize they were "supposed" to do that but I've never seen one that has actually been stamped. That includes the many I've owned and the hundreds I've inspected. My guess is that very few dealers paid attention to the directive telling them to do so.

I don't know how common it was. However, I've seen previous examples of it. Usually, it appears quite crudely done, just as it does in the example shown by Sven.

I've only seen examples of stamped ones on the internet but never in person. Again, based on my experience, my guess is that few dealers actually stamped them.

I have a feeling that when they were spot wielded on the column or Z bar when they tried to stamp them at the dealership many came off.

                        Nice tag IMO.

Interesting that the dyslexic stamper put the "3" on backwards.

edit. fixed the pic for you....

Richard - Thanks for fixing the pic. Also, looks like whoever stamped the date, first tried to do it near the left side of the tag and then switched spots.

My 67 was stamped 05 7 on the trim tag which could be a sold date since the car was built 3/23/67. No deduction was taken.
