Just got mine. What a fantastic job, thanks to all.
I have a few observations regarding my July 18, 1968 built L71 Coupe re: "early and late". VIN 259xx
A little background. My car's original owner stuck it away in his garage in 1973 with 30K miles. It was unearthed in 1989 and gone through keeping many original parts. What happened to it repair wise from 1968 to 73 is anybody's guess, but it is documented with photos from the time it was pulled from the garage.
First, the center gage console is grained, not smooth. I have assumed it must have been replaced early on when only grained versions were available but the new book says some late 68's and all 69's had the grained center gage bezel. So, it's still possible mine is not original but a chance that it is, which I like!
My seats have the release latches higher up, which is indicated for "late" cars.
But, my gas door has rivets both holding the emblem on and holding the hinge on. The book says this was changed to screws in May 68 "however spin riveted doors and bezels are occasionally seen on cars until the end of 1968 production."
Just some ramblings and once again, what a great document.
