    Not an order number but an internal, factory "build number". These were 3 digit numbers up to 500 for internal factory use. When 500 was reached, they started over again. So, in the case of, for example, 1970 models, there would have been 34 cars built during the model year with the same number, each 500 cars apart.

      Actually, in GM-speak it is the "job number". Each vehicle going down the line is a "job". It was strictly an informal way for the plant to keep track of production and has no relationship to any "official" number such as the order number or VIN.

        Yes, all my cars have them too, along with the "N03" on the tankers. And, my '81 early Bowling Green built car shows they changed and wrote the last 4 digits of the VIN there.
