    C2 tie rod orientation

I'm replacing the tie rods (ends and tubes) on my 67. Is there a correct orientation of the Left and Right threaded ends?

Do do the Left threaded ends go to the left? I looked in the AIM and Service Manual and did find anything.

    Thanks,

    Don

Thanks Greg. I have the AIM page but not the one labeled Figure one. Unless I'm missing something they still do not indicate orientation of the tie rod assembly.

        Re: C2 tie rod orientation

I found this on the Corvette Forum and it makes sense to me:

By convention both left hand threaded tie rods are supposed to be on the outside(connected to the steering arms.) Corvette tie rod ends and zerk fittings are identical inside and outside and differ only by either being right hand or left hand thread. So, when you screw them into the tie rod adjuster tubes you really can assemble them either way and they will work acceptably.

However, most mechanics expect that when they rotate both tie rod adjusters in the same direction one tie rod assembly should shorten the other should lengthen. This only occurs if you have the same hand thread on both of the steering arms.

          Hi Don,
As I look at that drawing the drivers side is on the left and we are looking forward. The center ends are looking at you and the outside ends are facing up. Hope this is correct.

Don, For correctness one clamp is rotated 90 degrees from the other.

One must also follow the instructions of view "A" and "B" plus the Note. The degree of variation allows the clamping portion of the clamp to fully cover the slot in the Tie Rod tube.

                Paul,
I think the slot in the tube has nothing to do with it.
The orientation of the clamps off of horizontal and vertical is to insure clearance under full turns in both directions.
The proximity of the A arms to the center two clamps is very close if not orientated as illustrated.
The note is not always obtainable. The term "near as possible" is questionable.

The degrees from the desired position are still within the clearance issues with the A-arms and frame. Over the years of adjustments I have found that that variable has allowed proper clamping of the tube.

I have too if you consider over 1/2" off center slot to gap alignment within the note "near as possible". That's why I claim not always possible.

FWIW, I am assembling mine now. I found a set that C Central is making is as close to DEAD NUTS original configuration as they come. They even are supplied with a real "on the money" ribbed tie rod end boot---like 75 bucks. I am totally impressed. No, don't work there, just FWIW. check them out.
