Re: Window sticker for 65
Harry and Dave, that sticker is the perfect example of why NCRS validation is important. It's been claimed to be an original (and may be, I don't know), but it's format is non-typical. It could be a St.Louis delivery, outside their normal procedures, (or some such anomaly), but the number would need to be checked by NCRS to validate it...
Roy, you and I don't disagree too much on this. I don't think the information pointed out in my posts in this thread was unknown to the majority of unscrupulous sellers. And those sellers who learned that stickers could be be validated, can't "correct" a thing to make their reproductions pass validation, no matter how much we "point out" about the number.
Conversely, I doubt that the vast majority of buyers had any idea that a sticker could be validated absolutely. Discussing it probably helped those who might have blindly accepted any old sticker and alerted some sellers not to try to pass of their "original" BS. I think that's going help those being conned, not hurt them. Imagine getting a looseleaf full of aged documents knowing that you can definitively invalidate the originality of one of them. That sure would put a damper on the entire collection of "documentation".- Top

On a side note, with the increase in aged documents, I think I'm an expert on coffee drinking, so I'm considering going into "coffee-stain" analysis business...- Top

Re: Window sticker for 65
The hardest part about reproducing a window sticker is getting the proper font. A lot of the old fonts are not available in modern word processing programs since they based on a dot matrix.Bill Strobel

Dave, sticker format actually did change during the 1965 model year, but that's not what's wrong with the one Harry re-posted...- Top

Re: Window sticker for 65
Thanks Gene, but window stickers are not what I would call "documentation", they're more for show. Given that most were scraped off, in little pieces, I'd consider any unscathed one a possible fake. In any case, there's an impossible-to-fake number on the original, known only to NCRS. Any buyer can check.
I just don't like putting an incorrect sticker on the car. The car involved is highly documented already, it certainly doesn't need more. It also won't ever be for sale and, if it was, any fool could find the discussion here and on Corvette Forum.
It's not a trim tag, or heaven forbid, sacred engine numbers- Top

Re: Window sticker for 65
That window sticker belongs to me. It came off of a 1965 Coupe that I restored in the early 80s. When I sold the car, for some reason, I did not let the window sticker go with it. I have kept it all these years in the top of my tool box. It was shown in a forum to try to get it back to the current owner (for free!), I am pretty sure it is an original, car had never been restored when I bought it (but desperately needed it from one end to the other). I chose to paint the car Ermine White instead of Glen Green (don't like that color personally).

Re: Window sticker for 65
Why would I spend $100 to verify a window sticker for a car that I no longer own and have had the documentation in my possession for 35 years, and was planning on giving to the current owner (if found)? The only reason I had it on the "C2 Orphan Document" forum was to try and get back to the original car. I do not think that back in the early 80s that someone would take the time and money to create a window sticker for a 250HP glen green coupe with low options and when I got it, it needed the original engine rebuilt, fiberglass damage repaired, a new paint job, new carpet, new seat covers, new door panels, new brakes, etc. ....someone is dreaming big time!!!- Top

Re: Window sticker for 65
Edward, Your window sticker has a very obvious difference between known/validated stickers created before and after your car was built. I would be very surprised if yours came back as an original one.
Reproduction stickers were available LONG before the early 80's.- Top

Re: Window sticker for 65
Wow! No hot buttons on this thread, eh? Sounds like a few 'burn' victims, which I understand with the crazy money involved these days. I made one for my '68 for fun. I added one non-standard option: 'this fake sticker' 'NO charge'. For anyone interested I have a font for Windows somewhere that replicates the dot matrix printer. I am thinking it was a 1501 but can't remember.- Top

Re: Window sticker for 65
I made a fake window sticker for my 67..... looks very authentic until you get to the bottom line where I inserted an additional line "Dealer Prep $130,000" Makes some smile, but cuts down on the question from spectators "will you take $4603 for it"? I just tell them you didn't read the bottom line......- Top
