If you're just interested in a standard rebuild, there may be a local shop in your area that could do this. If you want a restoration, I believe that Ken Bruno Motorsports offers this service.

However, alternators are fairly easy to rebuild yourself. All of the internal parts you need are easily and inexpensively available.

I really don't understand why a John Pirkle rebuild did not last, though. With the kind of use most of these cars see nowadays, a rebuild ought to last "forever". Are you sure you have an alternator problem and not some other problem that you're attributing to the alternator?

Thanks for the information. My car was not charging, I first tried 3 regulators, and that did nothing for my problem, so I installed my used alternator that I had replaced for a restored, correctly dated one for my July 66 Vette. My used alternator fixed my problem. Dutch

One of the internal parts of the alternator must have failed, probably one of the diodes, the heat sink assembly, or the brushes. Very simple tests that can be done with a VOM can easily determine which one. The test procedures are well covered in the Factory Service Manual. These parts are relatively easy to replace.

Ken has done about 25 alternators for me... maybe more. He's excellent!

                    Re: Rebuild alternators

Guys there is not much involved in getting an alternator functional again. This is outside the fact that the armature or the field windings are fried. But even those parts are available, but nominally outside a standard rebuild. Generally the diodes and the brushes need replacement. The bearings too if loud or turns rough. The only involved part is the comutator would possibly need turning if excessive mileage and wear to get flat and true. A simple way is to purchase a new alternator and swap cases. Up graded amperage units are available if desired. And is generally less cost than just purchasing the separate parts.

                      Re: Rebuild alternators

The results that the alternator was not charging is, the stator was burned up due to the a/c. This stator was not up pare to handle the 61 amps.
