Earlier '66 AC Compressor Questions (Part 2 )

An Excellent Good Morning to Everyone!

It's early morning October 21st, 2017 and I'm very happy to continue this thread into it's 2nd phase. It seems we wore out our stay on the original post. WOW! As of 01:28am it had 104 posts and 1,392 views!! Thanks to all of you who viewed/chimed in!

Apparently, we were only able to have 2 pages of posts then it seemed to drop off into cyberspace then and there. But looking at the beginning of the thread you see the stack of all poster's names listed under "Hybrid View". Dragging in down to the very bottom we saw "more replies below current depth...". Some folks were posting there and others chose to insert posts under earlier ones. It was becoming confusing how to track fresh posts.

So, to alleviate this confusion I've begun a Part 2 to the original post. This will create a more linear response. Please post any new post as of Oct 21st to this thread. That would be great!

    Thanks for responding,
    Mike

      Hey Guys,

To to keep it linear, I'm using my "Snipping Tool" to move the latest buried posts from last night forward to "Part 2". There's two guys who've posted and I'm moving them here based on posting time order.

So Ric Sauve.......You get top billing!!

      Thanks for posting. Mike

Re: Earlier '66 AC Compressor Questions (Part 2 )

          Good Morning Ric,

Thanks so much for keeping this thing going! Man, have I got a lot of questions about your car. But since I'm away from mine working here in Miami, I'll wait to get back up north to collect my thoughts before I ask too many. But if you have any questions about my car, fire away. I've got quite an inventory of shots of my car on my computer here.

I'm quite sure that muffler installed on your '66 L-36 is identical to the one that was installed on mine. And seeing as though there's only about 200 cars between ours, the mufflers should be the same!

Due to all this digging around the Technical Discussion Board researching these compressors, I've come across quite a few closeups of mufflers. And recently I've spotted what appears to be the same muffler as our originals installed on '65 AC cars. I'll post some shots soon for review.

The next post coming up that I'm transferring over is from Bill Caldwell. Check out the muffler of that '65 he's posted. What a coincidence that you're asking about your compressor's muffler and Bill posts right after yours showing the same muffler! Well, I think it's the same muffler. Your hose connection leading rearward to your evaporator box has a downward tilt to the pipe vs. Bill's '65 shot. I'll compare mine to yours when I get home. I'll let you know. If my memory serves me correctly, ours are identical. As discussed on the original thread, our L-36 mufflers have a different AIM part # vs. the small block mufflers. Gotta be some differences there.

Thanks again Ric, and would you please post more shots from all around your compressor? I'd really like some of all mount bolt headmarks and closeups of your U-shaped intake bracket to compressor rod. Closeups of the rod too. I purchased what I think is an original rod and would like to compare it to yours. Very hard to find!

          Take care, Mike

Transferring Bill Caldwell's posts over to "Part 2" keeping this thing linear. Great shots Bill! Mike

Re: Earlier '66 AC Compressor Questions (Part 2 )

I'm picking up my now restored 1966 build A/C compressor for my late October 1966 build 1967 Corvette tomorrow (Saturday) from Dom. The system was converted to R134 and I'm going back to R12. A place in Santa Ana called "The Air Shop" http://theairshop.com/ was recommended to me. I live in Fullerton/La Habra area and was hoping to find a place closer. One person mentioned La Habra Radiator. Anyone have any recommendations?

4 more shots from Bills's post. Man, the script sure scatters when you attach photos. And I can't edit them!!Mike

Re: Earlier '66 AC Compressor Questions (Part 2 )

Thanks for posting Bill! Nice shots! I'm really liking that compressor label's build date spread from the compressor casting date. 5 days! That's the closest I've ever seen. Anybody?

Do you have any shots of L-36 AC car compressors/brackets and condensers? I'd sure like a comparison to any info you might have. Ask away about my car if you've got any questions.

                    Take care,
                    Mike

Re: Earlier '66 AC Compressor Questions (Part 2 )

                      Ric,

On the left is the rod I purchased after a long search. This one has definite differences from a repro, but I'm still not sure if the '67 390/400hp w/AC rod is the same. I think it is even though it has a different GM part number.

                      '66 part #3887168
                      '67 part #3894366

Any '67 BB w/AC folks out there? Does this brace rod look identical to your original? Please chime in! Thanks.

The bracket on the right is a real Suction Throttling Valve (STV) bracket that covers the STV to the evaporator/blower box. Bubbuh and his pals took off with mine long ago. Another hard find. Yours should be there Ric. Could you let me know the headmarks on the 2 small screws that hold it in place? Take care, Mike..........I'm almost afraid to attach this photo for fear of what it's gonna do to this script......

Here is another 6550133 compressor from a early 1966 big block Corvette. It has the smooth case, six hole clutch. The build date on the label 081152. Aug 11, 1965 second shift. The date on the rear cover is H25 (Aug 2, 1965). It also as the original muffler.

                          Good Afternoon Everyone,

I'm sure that some of you are wondering what happened to "Part 2"of this thread. Well, I was contacted by the NCRS TDB Administrator earlier and was informed that they have merged both threads back into one. So Part 2 is gone now. Actually, I'm glad they did this audit. Thanks to them, there's now a pg.3 to continue this thread linearly. I hope there'll be a pg.4 And it will make more sense this way to track the archives.

So for now, disregard any references to "Part 2".
I'm gonna have to tweak a few things to make sense of the last day or so. But it's all good! We've got some fresh posts I see. Taking a look now. Thanks, Mike

Re: Earlier '66 AC Compressor Questions (Part 2 )

Thanks Page for this post of another "Earlier '66 AC Compressor". So far, there's only one posted that's got an earlier casting date. This one's definitely going into my files for this survey of Early '66 Corvette/Chevrolet #6555302 A6 compressors with casting dates of July (G), August (H), September (I), October (J), November (K), and December (L) of '65 for the 1966 production calendar year. And as always, any Midyear owner w/AC chime in with what your car has or any loose compressor that you'd like to report to this thread.

I'm looking forward to more posts by you Page. Good stuff! Mike

Hi Mike....As you are aware I currently own both a 64 and the 66 L36 both with factory air but neither one has the support bracket for the STV valve, so it appears bubba got both of mine. However over the years I have owned 2 65s, another 66 small block, a 67 small block all with factory air and do not remember any of those cars having that bracket, probably if work was done on the STV these were discarded, so I can't help there, when I get a chance I will take pics of the other brackets and bolts. I am somewhat limited in my computer skills please bear with me.

The STV bracket pictured is the same for a 63. I can see where folks would not install it as it is bitcX to install. That same bracket should be good for 63 to 66. I can't recall what the 67 POA valve used.
