If I recall from my younger days the early 265 cu in Chevy engines were prone to a wrist pin knock. At least that is what I think the sound I am hearing is. It is not a valve lifter clacking or a crankshaft knocking, therefore not much else left. Assuming it is a wrist pin, and the rest of the engine is good, is it possible to remove the piston with the bad pin without removing the engine from the car?

Very possible. To remove any piston you need to first remove the cylinder head on the side of the engine with the piston you want to remove. Next, you have to remove the oil pan and bearing cap of the rod connected to the piston you want to remove. Finally, you push the piston and connecting rod out the top of the block. You can actually remove all pistons this way which you might have to do if you haven't been able to positively identify the offending piston. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
