Need Help Interpreting JG: Convertible Glass

Page 135 of the 97-99 TIM&JG - 11. SIDE AND BACK WINDOWS doesn't specifically address the rear window glass for the convertible top. It does state,
"The side and back window glass is manufactured by AP Tech, a US subsidiary of Asahi Glass of Japan. The side and back window date are determined from the pattern of dots on the glass below the AP Tech logo.
"The 1997, 1998, and 1999 Corvettes have side and rear glass identified with the "Solar Ray" logo. The side and rear glass are UV filtered and are identified by "AS2" and the "TEMPERLITE" logo."

These statements seem to be limited to coupes and hardtops. My wife recently acquired a very low miles '98 Pace Car and the rear window glass is manufactured by PPG (see attached photo). I conducted an informal pole with some other '98 owners who are either original owners or certain the top is original and all have PPG glass like mine. There is a picture of the convertible rear window on page 138 but it's limited to the driver's side so the logos are not shown. Is this detail simply missing from the JG?

    Thanx

I think we have to regard all TIM&JGs as works in progress. I don't know what revision the 1966 folks are on, but the thread about early 1966 Air Conditioning compressors is research in progress apparently far beyond what is in the TIM&JG -- or at least that is what it looks like to me. NCRS has been judging 1966s for a long time; longer than I have been a member, and they are still learning things. That is no slam on the 1966 folks. In fact that is as it should be.

You are establishing research on one facet of 1997 to 1999s. This is a good thing. Rather than be critical of the TIM&JG look at is as an opportunity to improve the manual going forward.

No one knows everything about these cars. We are all learning. For many of us that learning process is a big part of the fun of the organization. Even though I have not participated in either thread in a technical sense -- I really have nothing to contribute to either -- I enjoy watching the knowledge unfold. I know I am not alone in that pleasure. Keep it up.

      Floyd,

PPG is the manufacturer. AS-2 indicates Tempered Side Glass. “7” is the single digit year (1997). DOT 18 is Department of Transportation number assigned to PPG. “M507” is PPG’s internal manufacturing process code. “4 8” is PPG’s month code - adding digits calculates month = 12 = December. PPG decode is included in C4 Judging Guides - should be added to C5 Guides. Answer: December 1997.

Agree with all above information. Have '98 Vert to support request.

Thank you gentlemen. That makes sense since this is from a Feb, 18, 1998 car.

            Terry,
My question was not meant to be critical in any way. My wife bought this car a couple weeks ago and we know nothing about C5's, let alone details like the logos on the rear window glass. We plan to have the car judged at the FL Regional in January so we're going through the JG confirming what we see. I just wanted to be sure we didn't have a replacement top.

The car only has 10k on the clock and appears to be very original. It still has the original air cleaner element installed.

Sorry if I misread your post. It sounds like you will have fun in Florida and provide the judges a learning experience that should be good all the way around. I'll see you there.

I do look forward to that. I'm embarrassed to admit that I have been a member for over 15 years and this is the first time we will have a car judged.
