Michael
The extension on the left is correct for your 1972. The one on the right is correct for the early part of 1970 model year. There is a photo of these two style tips in the 1970-72 TIM&JG with a caption that basically states what I just wrote.Terry- Top

Re: Help with '72 exhaust tip ID
I read that as well. I was unsure if these were original Gm parts. So there is no way there would be mismatched tips on a 72- Top

Re: Help with '72 exhaust tip ID
You can never say never regarding factory production. However, if the car were judged with that pair, there would need to be a deduction for non-typical factory production. If you believe they are original to your car and that is important to you, put them on, and accept the minimal point hit. Reproductions (not the stainless steel ones) would probably take a comparable hit as well.- Top

Re: Help with '72 exhaust tip ID
I would say the one on the left is a second design over the counter service tip. This is due to the spot welds around the perimeter. Originals would have been stick welded like a late 70 thru 72. The one on the right could have been installed originally but not likely since that style ended sometime in 1971. But it does predate the car. Myself I would not do a deduction as it could have been installed. The left one would get a configuration and date deduction.- Top

Re: Help with '72 exhaust tip ID
Is there a consensus as to whether or not the extension on the LEFT came fitted on a car out of St Louis?
As to the one on the RIGHT the Early 70 SEAMLESS version. Would a VERY LATE 72 possibly have this extension through a depletion of inventory situation in that 73's did not use the same extension?
If the car had TWO no seam extensions like the one on the right would it get points deductions?James A Groome

Re: Help with '72 exhaust tip ID
Is 400-500 a fair price for a pair of assembly line tips and clamps (as illustrated above).
I would rate them in Good condition.

Re: Help with '72 exhaust tip ID
I would agree with Paul and Sal on the left photo tip. The tip on the right is a 70 to late 70 ( July 1970) tip and I would look at it as a part that predates your 72 by at least 1 year or more depending on your build date. I've seen many 71's and none of them had the early 70 style tip so to say it's acceptable on a 72 is a big stretch in my opinion. The 70 style tip you have is quite rare and desireable. The tip you need is fairly common and obtainable.- Top

Re: Help with '72 exhaust tip ID
James,
This won't be the last item you see with loose and deceptive wording in an advertisement. I'll give them credit. They clarified things with the very small print at the bottom of the ad. You've recieved good advice here.- Top
