    1972 window washer pump unit

I am about to reinstall the washer pump unit on to the wiper motor. My question: Does the pin on the wiper motor need to line up with the slot on the backside of the washer pump unit? Or, regardless of the pin location, will this automatically happen after assembly and when the wiper/washer is activated?

    Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Jerry, Yes the washer needs to be set to line up with the motor. You have to rotate the 4 lobe inside cam until the hole on the metal cover lines up with the hole in the cam. Rotate the inner cam by hand until the metal piston arm rests on the lower "wide" part of the outer cam; once that happens the inner cam will be very easy to rotate and you can put a pin (I have a pop rivet) through the metal cover and through the inner cam. Install the washer and pull the pin. Lenny

Thanks Leonard. The Pictures are great.

I was told the washer pump slot would self engage with the wiper motor regardless of the alignment. Is this not correct? The reason I ask is; unfortunately I had already reassembled the washer pump onto the wiper motor before I initially asked for some guidance. I have not tried to test the system.

Is there a way to properly align the two without taking the assemble part again?

Your thoughts and/or continued guidance will be appreciated.

      Thanks again.

Jerome, if you push the washer switch and the pump makes a lot of noise through the cycle, you will need to remove the pump assy. to do the alignment with a drill bit or a pop rivet as shown.

It's a gamble. I know it is a pain to remove, but it may be the best way to go. I'm showing you the right way, but I didn't set my own correctly and as Ed said had a lot of "noise". I got lucky as it did set itself and does work.

Ed/Leonard, thanks for staying with me on this.

Will any damage occur if it does not seat properly and/or there is noise?

Not sure if damage will occur. I have 3 damaged pumps with broken pistons and/or cylinders; broken similar to your old one. I do not think that kind of damage can happen from not being set correct, but again, I'm not sure.
