Re: Difference between 69 and 72 carpet?tha
Mike------Just helped a friend acquire a 72 convertible project. With it came a reproduction set of carpet. As we were putting things away, we noticed the back side of the box said “1969 convertible 80/20 carpet black”. Will it fit his 72? What differences are there between the two?
Thanks!
I can't think of any difference between a 1969 and 1972 convertible 80/20 carpet set.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Off the top of my head (which is dangerous)...
Heel pad configurations, of course.
The 69 also differs from the 72 in how the floor carpet lays over (or under) the carpet for the bulkhead behind the seats. Binding will therefore be different.
Rear storage bulkhead shape will differ if cut correctly - but the repros aren't.
Unfortunately the reproduction versions of 69 vs 72 might not be drastically different. That likely surprises no one.
Of course, for both of those years the passenger's side floor carpet will differ for 4 speed vs automatic. That difference will be just as noticeable as the rest, if not more so.Vice-Chairman (West), Michigan Chapter NCRS

Mike, I was thinking Also the dimmer switch on 72 has a pad the sits on top of the switch, I think the 69 switch loops through a rubber grommet??New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: Difference between 69 and 72 carpet?tha
Patrick has listed several obvious differences that are spelled out in the JGs. To elaborate on the heel pad: 1972 has ribs that end before the top and does not have an IMCo logo.
The dimmer switch for most of 1969 is under the carpet with nothing on top. A few built toward the end of production had a vinyl pad but it is unlike later ones. There is a photo in the new JG.
The configuration of any reproduction carpet depends on the manufacturer. Back in the 1980s and even later, some companies sold one style to fit all 1968-76.- Top

Thanks for the input. Both are 4-speeds, so no problem there. I will let him determine the degree to which he wants to be correct—but at least it will fit. (As well as any repro carpet “fits”.)- Top

The '69 has an oval grommet that the seat belts go through. Not sure if later cars had these.
