    Cooling system C4

How can we curtail rusted fittings on the cooling system? Never saw fittings this corroded on a 16000 mile car. Interior of fittings total rust . Is this the anti freeze? Also what is good to place on inside of hoses to slip on with out resistance?

    Frank,
Any internal rust in the cooling system is, typically, a sign that the system hasn't been maintained i.e. regular flushing and a mix of 50/50 Zerex G05 and distilled water. As to the hose question, I've always used a little bit of soapy water or dilectric grease.

Frank over the years I have seen may GM cooling systems rust so bad that removing that much rust is impossible, If this what happened to your car,The only fix is to spent hours with the hoses off ,and block drains out, thermostat housing off, and all water hoses off, and start flushing heater core ,rad, block. Do this in a area that you don't want to have stained from the rust. replaced all hoses and remove overflow bucket and surge tank and flush them as everything settle's to the bottom. then each year check the color and repeat as required.

I like silicone grease on the inside of the hoses and under any worm clamps. Just remember this stuff is like Brylcream -- "a little dab will do ya"

The steel fittings (tee) for heater core etc is the problem. The recovery tanks are clean because of constant cleaning. The original anti freeze had no freezing value. I am going to flush with distilled water five or six times like i did with my other cars which worked well . The rubber hoses seem to be top quality being original but i did rip a few small hoses that i replaced. My 77 is clean as a whistle but i will flush that again. The prestone seems to work well in that. Thanks for your input!
