I have a date code in the engine block that begins with J. According to Nolan Adams Restoration Guide Vol 1 page 392 the letter I was dropped by GM because it was too close to the number 1. Therefore a J code is Sept. Am I correct? Thanks for any help

Re: 62 engine date code
Rick----
The letter "I" is not used for most STAMPED date coding. However, it is used for most CAST date coding including engine blocks. So, the letter "J" on an engine block cast-in date code represents October. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Oh ok. How would that work then if a casting number date is later than a stamped date, they happen to be month different ? Im confused. Thanks so much for any help. The.casting date using the J as Sept and the stamped date is Sept that would be perfect. Ant help would be appreciated.- Top

For stampings, the character "I" was often used to represent a "1". I don't know of a case in which the character "I" was used to represent an actual letter "I".
I would decode yours as November, 21 (i.e. 11 21). So, in your case, each of the "I" represent "1"In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
