    Rag Joints- 63-82

    FYI NCRS,
About 8 years ago l posted the quality GM rags joints were being discontinued and advised all those that have a car they plan on keeping to head to their local GM dealer to get them at $55-60 each. Many listened and bought them before they were gone, now try and find a quality L69-82 NOS one for under $150, most are over $200. Well here goes the last warning on the quality aftermarket C2 rags, get then while you can before they are also long gone. Unless someone comes up with a real quality rag you will be stuck with the junk on the market or convert to U-Joint. I can't mention the vendor but there is really only one place, not too far from me - outside of CT, that has them.

      Gary-----

I saw this coming 25 years ago. So, I stocked up on both the 67-69 couplers as well as the 69-82 couplers. I think I've got enough to last me about the next 200 years, or so [sorry, none for sale]. I'm figuring if I live to be 200, I might need them.

I suspect LICS in New York. Search for Part #18-37D.

Steering parts aren't the only things going away. I suspect the last of the 5 cut usa made ring & pinion are now gone or close to it. That leaves 2 cut gears and who know how long they will still make them here. I have not used the other brands but the are all imported now and limited as the market draws down. I see REM polishing is being offered more and suspect that has to do more with setup then heat for this application

              Gary,

The LIC part for 63-66 non-tele is already no longer available.

Sorry to hear that, since they apparently will not be replaced.

I stocked up on R&P, too. In fact, I guess the short list is what I did not stock up on.

Wow - I wonder when that happened as I bought one from LICS about 18-20 months ago and its still on the shelf...has the 7-layer core, etc..

Yup, you're right---I've got none of those. I wouldn't be interested in any of those even at a "firesale" price. No 3X2 manifolds or carbs, either.

The quality material for making the rags is not available anymore. Tom Reina (corvette steering) told me that about 7 years ago when we were talking about rags. I had planned to visit him and go over the rag rebuilding but the material was gone then, that was also about the time GM stopped making them. Be happy you have a good one. I hope someone picks this up and starts to make a quality one that will last, but who knows.

                            Patrick,

I used to have plenty of those but I bought them for profit and not bragging that I have those and sleeping with them. When the opportunity came along I sold them to my fellow Corvette owners for a profit. In the fact that they were discontinued each and every one of them was grateful that I sold those parts to them.
I don't have any desire to sleep with Corvette parts or put them up on the shelf and worship them while others need them for their restoration and enjoyment.

                            JR

PS. When I'm dead and gone someone will say that they bought that part for old Joe (Ray) and say thanks again!
